How to Make Anti-Acne Face Wash Gel?

Aim: To prepare, evaluate and submit an anti-acne face wash gel. 

Requirements:  Soxhlet extractor, Beakers, Measuring cylinder, Stirrer and Vacuum evaporator. 

Chemicals:  Carbopol 940, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Triethanolamine, Propylene Glycol, Sodium lauryl sulphate, Guava seeds, Ethanol and Water. 

Formulation Consideration:  Acne is found as the most common skin problem which is generally characterized by the presence of inflammatory lesions, comedon, seborrhea, etc. acne may cause long-lasting, physical and detrimental psychosocial effects associated with depression and anxiety without disease severity. Although these effects are usually improved by treatment. Acne develops in the presence of commensal bacteria Propionibactum acne, Staphylococcus epidermadis and Malassezia furfur in the follicles. Long-term uses of antibiotics for treatment develop resistance to the drugs. Preventive approaches involve the removal of oil from the face.  Proper cleaning and washing require for this purpose. Various researches have proved the utility of herbal-based formulations for cleaning purposes which also removes excess oil; considering this fact present work was intended to prepare a face wash gel using Psidium guajava (Guava) seed extract, belonging to the family Myrtaceae, with antioxidant and antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic properties. The seeds are the waste product of the industry and are not yet used for any beneficial purpose. The various other ingredients used for a specific purpose like; Carbopol 940 as a gelling agent, Methylparaben and Propylparaben as preservatives, Triethanolamine as a neutralizer, Propylene Glycol as Humectant and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate as a Foaming agent. Finally, the volume of the formulation was adjusted with distilled water.

Procedure: 

Preparation of the Extract: Take Seeds (100 g) and subject them to alcoholic extraction (Soxhlet Extraction) then, evaporate the excess solvent under a rotary vacuum evaporator to obtain clear liquid (Oil). Then re-dissolve the oil extract in ethanol at a 1 mg/ml ratio and use it for formulating the face wash gel. 

Preparation of Gel Base: 

  1. Prepare a solution of propylene glycol and sodium lauryl sulphate, and mix these two solutions. 
  2. Add preservatives to the above mixture. 
  3. To the above mixture add carbopol slowly and stir till a gel-like dispersion is obtained. 
  4. To this, the stock solution of seed extract is to be added, 
  5. Finally, triethanolamine is added and the volume made to 100 ml with water 
  6. Stir the gel to get uniform consistency and left overnight. 
  7. Later stored in an appropriate container. 

Label: For external use only. 

Storage: Keep in a cool and dry place. 

Packaging: Packed in narrow-mouth plastic disposable tubes. 

Use: Cleanses the skin and controls acne.  

Directions: Squeeze the pea size quantity of gel and gently rub the face and rinse with water.
