Aim: To prepare and submit Codeine Linctus.
Requirements: Codeine Phosphate, Lemon Syrup, Benzoic acid solution, Chloroform spirit, Purified water, Compound tartrazine solution, Syrup.
Theory: Linctuses are viscous, liquid, oral preparations that are usually prescribed for the relief of cough. Linctuses are used for the treatment of cough. Codeine Linctus is indicated in adults for relief of the symptoms of dry or irritating coughs. It contains compound tartrazine solution and syrup as coloring and sweetening agent, benzoic acid solution, and chloroform spirit as a preservative. Codeine phosphate is the main drug that is used as a cough suppressant.
Formula:
Ingredients | Standard formula |
Codeine phosphate | 3 g |
Lemon syrup | 200 ml |
Benzoic acid solution | 20 ml |
Chloroform spirit | 20 ml |
Purified water | 20 ml |
Compound tartrazine solution | 10 ml |
Syrup, up to | 1000 ml |
Procedure:
- Take weighed amount of codeine phosphate in a conical flask.
- Add water to the flask, and heat gently to dissolve.
- Add color, benzoic acid solution, and chloroform spirit one at a time and mix thoroughly after each addition.
- Add lemon syrup and mix.

Storage: Store in an amber-colored bottle, as codeine phosphate degrades in light.
