Aim: To prepare, evaluate and submit foundation lotion.
Requirements: 100 #sieve, Beaker, Water bath and Suitable container.
Chemicals: Liquid Paraffin, Cetyl alcohol, Glyceryl monostearate, Triethanolamine, Ferric oxide, Titanium dioxide, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Perfume and Water.
Formulation Consideration: Foundation lotion is a modification of vanishing cream. It is an o/w lotion made for daytime use. Its purposes are to provide a nondrying sufficiently tacky coat for superposed face powder. It contains a small amount of colour pigment 2.5-3% from a suitable substrate for use of powder while those with higher concentrations are suitable for heavy makeup. The coloured pigment used generally is a mixture of 2% colour (e.g. ferric oxide and 98% titanium dioxide) which act as a whitener (opacifier) and also covers blemishes on the skin. Allantoin or some other wound healing agents may also be incorporated. The TiO2 used should have a finer particle size. Zinc oxide and talc are the other two whiteners. TiO2 is poorly wettable. Hence TiO2 is preferred. Ferric oxide is available in two colours red and yellow. By varying the amount and type of ferric oxide used the coloured foundation lotion can be used with various skin types.
Anhydrous foundation lotion is used with heavy makeup. Liquefying cleansing cream or w/o type of cleansing cream. They are required to be thixotropic so that they can be easily applied. Liquid paraffin is used as oil and imparts emollient properties. Cetyl alcohol gives consistency to the lotion. GMS and Triethanolamine act as an emulsifier
