Aim: To prepare, evaluate and submit polyherbal shampoo.
Requirements: Sonicator, Macerator, Distillation unit, Beakers, Funnel, Extractor, Heating mental and Evaporator, citric acid.
Chemicals: Custard apple seeds, Neem seeds, Orange peels, Eucalyptus leaves, Lime juice, Gelatin, Acacia gum, Water, Methylparaben, Petroleum ether, and Ethanol.
Formulation Consideration: The herbal shampoo is a cosmetic preparation that uses plant secondary metabolites for washing hair and scalp just like a regular shampoo. It is an alternative to the synthetic shampoo available in the market. Herbalists today believe in helping people build their good health. Modern era everyone is aware of herbal products, and it is proven that herbs enhance health. In this formulation Annona squamosa (Custard apple)seed oil extracted with petroleum ether, Azadirachta indica (Neem) leaf extract, Citrus sinensis (orange) peel oil, Eucalyptus globules (Nilgiri) leaf oil and Sapindus mukorossi (soap nut) extracts were used as the main ingredients for the preparation of Clear Polyherbal shampoo with good cleansing and detergency, small bubble size, having excellent anti-head lice activity. A small amount of Methylparaben was added as a preservative and pH was adjusted with citric acid.
Custard apple grounded seeds can be applied to hair, to get rid of lice. The human head louse, Pediculus human uscaptails, is a small insect causing a public health problem, especially in poor sanitary conditions. Farmers in Vietnam use seed oil to control lice. In Thailand, research has shown the anti-head lice activity of Annona squamosa. The neem tree is considered a natural insecticide plant. The quality of pesticides and pharmacological products depends upon the contents of Azadirachtin and Nimbin in the plant. Rita or soap nut pericarp extract is used as a foaming agent that has been used for hair cleansing properties. The orange peel which is considered a waste and can be used for the extraction of essential oil has plenty of applications ranging from flavoring agent in food, cosmetics it’s used as anti-dandruff agent, and insect repellants. An ideal shampoo must possess adequate viscosity to facilitate removal from the bottle. So many natural materials are available we select a 10% gelatin solution for this purpose as it shows pseudoplastic behavior and forms clear solutions. Lemon juice was added as a natural oxidant, chelating agent, and anti-dandruff agent.
All the ingredients used to formulate shampoo are safer than silicone and poly quaternion synthetic conditioning agents which can greatly reduce hair protein loss during combing instant of using cationic conditioners.

Procedure:
Preparation of Plant Extracts: Wash underwater 500 grams of custard apple seeds, 750 grams of neem seeds, 500 grams of orange peels, and 650 grams of eucalyptus leaves and dry at room temperature. Custard apple seed powder was subjected to a soxhlet extractor for 6 hours with petroleum ether, collect neem seed oil by expression method, subject citrus peel powder was to steam distillation. Collect aqueous extracts of Reeta by the maceration process. Extract separately all the extracts, filter and concentrate in a vacuum evaporator, and store in a labeled container.
Formulation of Poly Herbal Shampoo:
- Formulate pure herbal shampoo by mixing custard apple seed oil petroleum ether extract, neem oil ethanolic extract, citrus oil, and soap nut aqueous extract in definite amounts shown in the table.
- Add herbal extracts to a 10% gelatin solution and mix them for 20 minutes with continuous stirring.
- Add Lemon juice, Methylparaben with stirring.
- Finally, adjust the pH by adding an optimum quantity of 1% citric acid solution.
- Add a few drops of rose essential oil for a good aroma for anti-head lice shampoo.
- Make the final volume up to 100 ml with Reeta extract.
- Store the measured volume of shampoo in a labeled container.
Label: For external use only.
Storage: Store in a cool and dry place.
Packaging: Packed in a narrow-mouth bottle.
Use: To prevent premature aging, graying of hair, scalp dryness, and itchiness. It also controls split ends and excessive hair loss. To remove oils, dandruff, dirt, environmental pollution, etc
Directions: Squeeze the soft, instant liquid onto your hands, dilute with water and apply on hair then rinse with water.
