How to Prepare Lozenges

Aim: To prepare and submit 4 units of flavoured lozenges. 

Requirements: Sucrose, Corn syrup, Glucose, Beaker, Moulds, Heating mantle etc. 

Theory: Lozenges are solid preparations consisting of sugar and gum medicated with a substance, usually having a local action in the mouth and throat. They are also used for slow administration and slow release of a medicament for the treatment of indigestion and cough. They are also called touches. They are prepared either by moulding or by compression. 

Formula:

D-glucose50 ml 
Corn syrup50 ml 

The formula for corn syrup:

D-glucose20 gm 
Purified water5 ml 
Citric acid0.1 mg 

Procedure: 

  1. Weigh the required amount of sucrose. 
  2. Prepare the corn syrup by mixing glucose and water. 
  3. Weigh the required amount of glucose. Add water to it and prepare a solution. 
  4. Heat this solution on the heating mantle till the temperature of the solution reaches  135°C. 
  5. Now add sucrose to it and heat till the temperature becomes 140°C. 
  6. Mould this solution and freeze in the freezer for 5-10 minutes.

Storage: Store in a well-closed container and keep in a cool place.
