Aim: To prepare and submit 1000 ml of Magnesium hydroxide mixture.
Requirements: Mortar and pestle, Beaker, Glass rod, Magnesium sulphate, Sodium hydroxide, Light magnesium oxide, Chloroform, etc
Theory: Magnesium hydroxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Mg(OH)2. It is a white solid with low solubility in water. Magnesium hydroxide mixture is an aqueous oral suspension of hydrated magnesium oxide. It may be prepared from a suitable grade of light magnesium oxide.
Formula:
Ingredients | Standard Formula |
Magnesium sulphate | 47.5 g |
Sodium hydroxide | 15 g |
Light magnesium oxide | 52.5 g |
Chloroform | 2.5 ml |
Purified water | Sufficient to produce 1000 ml |
Procedure:
- Dissolve sodium hydroxide in 150 ml of purified water. Add light magnesium oxide, and mix to form a smooth cream. Then add a sufficient amount of purified water to produce 250 ml.
- Pour this suspension into a solution of magnesium sulphate in 250 ml of purified water. Stir continuously during mixing.
- Allow the precipitate to subside. Remove the clear liquid, and transfer the residue to a calico strainer. Allow to drain and wash the precipitate with purified water until the washings give only a slight reaction for sulphates,
- Mix the washed precipitate with purified water. Dissolve chloroform in the mixture and add a sufficient amount of purified water to produce 1000 ml.
