Single Strength Chloroform Water
Aim: To prepare and submit 100 ml of Single Strength Chloroform Water as I.P.
Requirements: Chloroform, Distilled water, Beaker, Pipette, Glass rod, Measuring cylinder, etc.
Theory: Chloroform water is aromatic water. Chloroform (CHCl3) is a clear colorless liquid having a specific gravity of 1.474 to 1.479 and possesses a characteristic odor with a burning sweet taste. The solubility of chloroform is 1 in 800 parts of water. In the preparation of chloroform water, vigorous shaking is required to subdivide the chloroform into small globules for enhancing its solubility. Dispersing agents are not required in this preparation.
Formula:
Ingredients | Standard formula |
Chloroform | 0.25 ml |
Purified water | 100 ml |
Procedure:
- Take some amount of distilled water in a beaker. Then pipette out 0.25 ml of chloroform.
- Put this 0.25 ml of chloroform dropwise in the beaker and stir it continuously.
- Pour the solution into the measuring cylinder and make the volume up to 100 ml.
Category: Preservative, flavoring agent, mild carminative in flatulence, and diaphoretic.
Storage: Store in a well-closed container and keep in a cool place.
