Aim: To prepare and submit 100 ml of simple syrup as I.P.
Requirements: Sucrose, Distilled water, Beaker, Pipette, Glass rod, Measuring cylinder, etc.
Theory: Syrups are the clear, homogenous, concentrated solutions of sugar dissolved in purified water. Syrups act as self-preservative as they exert high osmotic pressure due to the high concentration of sugar in them and they do not allow bacteria to grow. Simple syrup I.P. concentrated is a saturated solution of sucrose in purified water, the concentration is 66.7% w/w. Syrups are good demulcents and soothing agents and hence they are of special value in cough syrup. Flavored syrups are a convenient form of masking disagreeable tastes.
