Aim: To prepare and submit a strong Iodine solution I.P.
Requirement: Iodine, Potassium iodide, Alcohol 50%, Beaker, Glass rod, Measuring cylinder, etc.
Theory: The iodine is very slightly soluble in water. Its solubility can be increased by potassium iodide. Potassium iodide reacts with iodine to form polyiodide, which is more soluble in 50% alcohol. As the preparation is used internally as well as externally, 50% alcohol is used as a vehicle. Alcohols absorb heat from the body and get evaporated, thereby causing a cooling effect.
Formula:

| Iodine | 10 ml |
| Potassium iodide | 6 ml |
| Alcohol 50% q.s. | 100 ml |
Procedure:
Depending upon the quantity of preparation to be submitted, the working formula is calculated.
- Dissolve potassium iodide and Iodine in three fourth quantity of alcohol.
- Add a sufficient amount of alcohol to produce the required volume.
Category: Antiseptic.
Storage: Store in a well-closed container and keep in a cool place. The material of the container should be resistant to iodine.
