Assay of Ethosuximide

Molecular formula: C7H11NO2

Molecular weight: 141.17

Materials Required: Ethosuximide: 0.2 g; dimethylformamide: 50 mL; azo-violet (0.1% W/V in DMF): 2 drops; sodium methoxide 0.1 N.

Procedure: Weigh accurately about 0.2 g of ethosuximide and dissolve in 50 mL of dimethyl formamide, add 2 drops of azo-violet solution as an indicator, and titrate with 0.1 N sodium methoxide until gives a deep blue color as an endpoint. Take precautions to prevent the absorption of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Perform a blank determination and make any necessary corrections.

Reaction:

Factor Calculation:

1 mole of CH3ONa ≅ 1 mole of ethosuximide

1000 mL of 1N CH3ONa ≅ 141.17 g of C7H11NO2

1 mL of 0.1N CH3ONa ≅ 0.01417 g of C7H11NO2
