Preparation of Simple Syrup USP

Aim: To prepare and submit 100 ml of simple syrup U.S.P.

Requirements: Sucrose, Distilled water, Beaker, Pipette, Glass rod, Measuring cylinder, etc.

Theory: Syrups are the clear, homogenous, concentrated solutions of sugar dissolved in purified water. Syrups act as self-preservative as they exert high osmotic pressure due to the high concentration of sugar in them and they do not allow bacteria to grow. Syrups are good demulcents and soothing agents and hence they are of special value in cough syrup.  Flavored syrups are a convenient form of masking disagreeable tastes.  Simple syrup U.S.P. concentrated is a nearly saturated solution of sucrose in purified water, concentration is 85% w/v.

Preparation of Simple Syrup USP:  Syrup may be prepared by using boiling water or preferably without heating by percolation.

By percolation:

  1. Moisten with a few drops of water the pledget of cotton plugged into the neck of the percolator.
  2. Place the sucrose in the percolator and add 450 ml of purified water. Regulate the flow to a steady drip of percolate. Return the percolate, if necessary, until all the sucrose is dissolved.
  3. Wash the inside of the percolator and the cotton with a sufficient quantity of purified water to make the percolate measure 1000 ml and mix.
